DPS Board Chair Dr. Chrisondra Goodwine said this in a statement.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the unexpected passing of my dear friend, mentor and colleague, Board Member Karen Wick, who passed away on December 6, 2025. It was my great honor to know and serve with Karen on the Dayton Public Schools Board of Education for the past four years.

“Karen represents the best of public service. Without a doubt, she is the kindest, most optimistic, and friendly member of our board. She leads with passion, humility, and unwavering grace. No matter how heavy the issues, no matter how difficult the moment, Karen shows up with a determined heart and a genuine smile to remind us all why this work matters.

“She wore many hats in our school district, but what she cherished most—and what defined her—was being the mother of her two wonderful children, both proud graduates of the Stivers Academy for the Performing Arts. Her love for them mirrored her love for our students: fierce, protective, and confident in their unlimited potential.

“Karen leads with her heart. Her love for this district can be felt in every activity she attends and every relationship she builds. Whether she is encouraging students, supporting staff, or simply showing up in the quiet moments that never make the headlines, her impact is ongoing and deeply human. Her belief in working with people – not just directing from a distance – is a legacy that will live on in our schools and communities forever.

“Karen gave of herself selflessly to people. Whether it was the simplest, most thoughtful act of baking a delicious meal for others, opening her dining room to the Student Senate program or the Stivers Orchestra, or simply serving those who considered her dining room one of the safest and warmest places in Dayton, Karen’s love was shown in countless quiet and meaningful ways. In every sense of the word, we have lost one of our city’s greatest hearts.

“To me personally, Karen was more than a colleague. She was a friend. She was a mentor. She was always there for me when I needed guidance and encouragement the most. I thank God for the four years I had the privilege of experiencing her joy, her wisdom, and her unwavering light.

“I ask that you pray for her family, friends and all who loved her during this difficult time. Life is precious and short. Do your best to cherish the ones you love.

“In this time of loss, may we be gentle with one another. May we choose compassion, extend grace freely, and find joy in the world like Karen did—as if anything was possible. May we honor her beautiful spirit as we continue to serve our students, colleagues, and each other with the love, hope, and generosity she so generously gave.

“On behalf of the Board of Education, I offer my deepest condolences to her family, friends and all those she touched.”
