According to local news reports, 19-year-old Leah Palmirotto was believed to be exploring a vacant building on Emory University’s Briarcliff campus with a group when she fell to her death.
She was pronounced dead at the scene on Friday, December 19.

According to local outlet WAGA, Leah’s father, Todd Palmirotto Jr., recalled in an interview this week the moment police came to the door with news of Leah’s death.
“She’s perfect,” Todd added, “and I’m blown away. I’m just not sure.”
He said he believed this was not the first time his daughter had visited the place where she died. Authorities are still investigating what caused Leah’s fall.
“We always have something in mind that might happen,” he explains.

Tom Cavanaugh, a family friend who organized the online fundraiser, said donations will be used to pay for Leah’s funeral and memorial service.

According to Cavanaugh, Leah had a keen interest in photography and “enjoyed exploring and photographing abandoned buildings.”
“She was a beautiful and vibrant young woman from Florida who loved the beach and the outdoors,” Cavanaugh wrote. “She was always the most popular kid in school and got along with everyone. Her family is devastated.”
Cavanaugh said Leah is survived by her father, mother and two brothers.
According to WAGA, an informal memorial service will be held at Kennesaw Park on Tuesday.
