Country music star battling life-threatening diagnosis at 28: ‘It’s terrifying’

“It’s a genetic disorder called Brugada syndrome,” she told the website. “A lot of my family members have died unexpectedly and they were very healthy and very young. So it’s very scary.”

It adds that people with Brugada syndrome “are at increased risk for irregular heartbeats starting in the heart’s lower chambers (ventricles). This disorder causes abnormal rhythms in the heart’s lower chambers, leading to ventricular fibrillation (v-fib) and sudden cardiac death, often at rest or during sleep.”

Cook told Taste of Country she underwent multiple electrocardiograms to arrive at the diagnosis and is working with a cardiologist to try to learn more about her condition.

“The crazy thing is, it doesn’t really affect my daily life,” she said. “That’s the scary thing about Brugada Syndrome. It feels like a ghost is surrounding you. Because there are no warning signs, no symptoms. It’s just one of those things where all of a sudden one day something inside you stops and you’re gone.

“It’s horrible,” she added. “It doesn’t affect anything I do or how I operate, until one day, maybe it will.”
