Police initially tried to impress a first date after a man engaged in an aggressive driving maneuver in a church parking lot in Englewood, Florida, on Saturday night that ended with an arrest.
Charlotte County deputies arrested 28-year-old Landon Morris after receiving multiple reports of a gray Corvette spinning donuts at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Gulf Coast Boulevard. Witnesses said the car sped through the parking lot at high speed, leaving heavy tire marks and spewing thick blue smoke into the air. At one point, the smoke was so thick that the vehicle was temporarily obscured from view.
The activity, which took place near nearby homes, alarmed residents who said the noise was extremely loud and consistent with a heavily modified vehicle. Deputies noted the Corvette could be heard far outside the parking lot.
According to investigators, an officer initially heard the Corvette speeding south on Winchester Avenue near South McCall Road. The car was then seen speeding through several residential areas before entering a church parking lot, where Morris allegedly began spinning in the parking lot. Even as law enforcement arrived on the scene, smoke was still billowing from the sidewalk.
Detectives said Morris admitted he drove from Orlando to meet a woman from Rotonda West for what was supposed to be their first date. The passenger reportedly admitted she played a role in encouraging the stunt and apologized to officers, saying she asked Morris to perform the donuts to impress her.
Instead, the display quickly drew the attention of neighbors and law enforcement. Morris was taken into custody and charged with racing.
Residents in the area said the incident highlighted ongoing concerns about reckless driving in the neighborhood. Those concerns have intensified since a fatal crash in July led county officials to install a new four-way stop on Ocean Spray Boulevard. Neighbors noted that the streets are frequently used by families and children and dangerous driving is particularly disturbing.
Authorities did not report any injuries related to the incident, but deputies highlighted the potential risks posed by high-speed stunts in residential areas. The investigation ended with Morris being arrested at the scene, and the first date ended very differently than planned.
