Washington Commanders left tackle Laremy Tunsil is not only a great football player, but he’s also a smart businessman. Earlier this week, Tunsil and commanders agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $60.02 million. Washington is now contracted with Tunsil through the 2028 season.
As for Tunsil, he once again resets the offensive tackle market. He also became the first offensive lineman to average $30 million per season. Did we tell you that Tunsil represents himself?

The most amazing thing is that Tunsil has reset the tackle market twice before, becoming the first offensive lineman to earn $20 million per season and the first offensive lineman to earn $25 million per season. Tunsil, 31, was a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft and has now signed three contract extensions, which is almost unheard of in the NFL outside of quarterback and 49ers left tackle Trent Williams.
CBS Sports salary cap expert Joel Curry was evaluating the various contracts being handed out during the first week of free agency this week, and Tusil’s new contract caught his attention.
Laremy Tunsil represents himself as the first offensive lineman in the NFL to earn $30 million per year. The left tackle received a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension from the Washington Commanders that includes $61.5 million in guaranteed money, of which $52.655 million was fully guaranteed at signing. His $32.5 million signing bonus set a record for an offensive lineman.
Tunsil is also the first offensive lineman to hit the $20 million and $25 million mark in annual earnings in 2020 and 2023, respectively. He prefers to sign short-term deals (extensions of no more than three years) so that he can continually benefit from changing market conditions. By comparison, Tristan Wirfs, who is elite at both left and right tackle, signed a five-year, $140.625 million contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024. If Tusil continues to perform at a high level, he will be paid handsomely again in 2028 when he is 33 years old.
If Tunsil’s performances remain strong, he has set himself up for another lucrative contract extension in two years’ time. Washington used multiple draft picks to acquire Tunsil from the Houston Texans last March, and he was phenomenal for the quarterbacks. Not only will he remain an elite pass protector in 2025, but he’s also impressed Washington with his run blocking abilities. At the end of the season, general manager Adam Peters made it clear that extending Tunsil’s contract was a major goal of the offseason.
