Commanders kicker Jake Moody wants to prove he belongs

The Washington Commanders will bring back kicker Jake Moody in 2026, so he spoke to the media Thursday after signing a new one-year contract.

The 26-year-old shot 18/20 last year during his time in Chicago and Washington, including 2/2 on 50-plus field goals and 56 on slugging.

Just last week, the Commanders chose not to extend a restricted free agent offer to Moody. A week later, the Commanders re-signed Moody as an unrestricted free agent to a one-year contract. Some Commanders fans may remember that Moody, who was playing for the Chicago Bears at the time, kicked a field goal that helped the Bears defeat the Commanders on Monday Night Football in 2025.

The life of an NFL kicker is that you always have to prove yourself. Then, when you fumble, you have to get right back on the field and make the next kick so there’s no room to pout for the kicker.

“I wanted to prove to myself that I deserve to be here, that I belong here,” Moody said. “It has nothing to do with last year or anyone else or anything. Just changing my mindset and focusing on now and doing everything I can to help myself play the best football I can.”

Moody understands that life as a kicker in the NFL is not easy.

“It’s a tough thing to be a kicker in this league. You just have to learn to have a bad memory and be able to move on to the next kick. I think it’s good to come out here and have a good reset.”

Moody credited specialists Trace Way (punter) and Tyler Ott (long snapper) for setting a good tone, as well as special teams coach Larry Izzo.

Moody reminded the media that in his job, the most important kick is always the next kick. I think he’s right. Kickers seem to be only as good as their last kick…at least in the eyes of fans.
