College football teams get Christmas Day tour of Navy Warships ahead of Gator Bowl

Christmas brings a unique holiday experience for two college football programs preparing to compete in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.

Players and coaches from the University of Virginia Cavaliers and the University of Missouri Tigers visited Naval Base Mayport, where they toured a U.S. Navy ship as part of Gator Bowl week festivities. The visit provided a break during competition preparations and an up-close look at life aboard some of the Navy’s most advanced ships.

“It’s always one of those moments where you hope the team thinks it’s as cool as we do,” said Katie Cox, vice president of marketing, membership and community relations for the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. “The Missouri staff was hooked as soon as they walked in the door.”

Missouri players visited the USS Mason, while Virginia players explored the USS Lassen. Sailors guided the group around the ship, explaining daily operations, onboard technology and the Navy’s maritime mission.

Players listen as instructors describe the ship’s capabilities, including weapons and intelligence systems.

“You should see a smile on their face when they’re checking weapons and intelligence,” Cox said. “These are truly incredible experiences.”

This trip holds special significance aboard the USS Lassen. Its commander, Lt. Col. Kevin Walter is a University of Virginia alumnus, making the Cavaliers’ visit a complete moment for the team and crew.

As excitement continues to build during Jacksonville Bowl Week, attention now turns to the game itself.

“For both teams, they’re playing the Jaguars in an NFL stadium,” Cox said. “We’re on fire in Jacksonville.”

The Virginia Cavaliers and Missouri Tigers will face off Saturday in the 81st annual TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at EverBank Stadium.
