Cohasset man accused of shooting family dog while hunting for coyotes from window in 2025

A 59-year-old Cohasset man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after he allegedly shot and killed his wife’s dog in August 2025 while hunting coyotes through their second-story window.

Christopher Lucas was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence, hunting without a license and hunting out of season.

Police said the charges stem from an incident that occurred on Aug. 16, 2025, at a residence on Hillside Drive in Cohasset.

The investigation determined that Lucas allegedly shot his wife’s 14-year-old dog, Liz, in the head while trying to hunt a coyote from a second-story window of a room above the garage.

Investigators determined the home was allegedly within 500 feet of several occupied residences.

Investigators quickly learned that Lucas allegedly did not have a valid Massachusetts hunting license at the time of the incident and that the hunt occurred outside of legal hunting season, police said.

Cohasset police said the tragic incident was captured on the home’s security camera system, with the video allegedly showing the dog being shot and a family member crying over the dying animal.

As part of the investigation, police said the Cohasset Police Department revoked Lucas’ license to carry a firearm and seized multiple firearms from the residence.

Lucas is being held at the Cohasset Police Department on $1,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Quincy District Court.
