Cody Bellinger had a harder time catching the ball in Friday’s game, but the New York Yankees outfielder finally made it work. Somehow.
In the ninth inning against the Miami Marlins, Miami shortstop Xavier Edwards hit Yankees Ryan Yarbrough’s fly ball to left field into the warning track. Bellinger, running back, made a leaping catch that seemed simple at first glance but was impressive.
However, replays showed the ball initially bounced off the heel of Bellinger’s glove. He still managed to block the ball with a lunge.
It wasn’t quite the best catch of the year, but it was certainly impressive.

The catch saved scoring position for the Yankees, who won 8-2. Bellinger hit his third homer, going four-on-one, with the bases loaded, and Aaron Judge hit his third homer of the year.
The outfield is expected to be another strength for the Yankees heading into the season. Bellinger re-signed with the team, signing a five-year contract worth $162.5 million. With center fielder Trent Grisham also returning with a signed qualifying contract and Judge without any spot in right field, Bellinger remains in left field, where he was one of the best players in Major League Baseball last season.
He’s also off to a strong start this year, hitting .280/.400/.400 in seven games.
