MS NOW anchor Chris Hayes stopped by “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Wednesday, where he discussed the “incredible jurisdiction” Minnesota officials discovered this week.
Colbert and Hayes discussed the shooting death of a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis earlier in the day. Members of the Trump administration, including the president himself, have accused the victim of committing domestic terrorism by trying to run over an ICE agent in front of his car. However, this view has been widely refuted by Minnesota officials and those who watched video of the incident online.
Hayes said the tragedy was the latest in an increasing number of violent interactions between ICE agents and American citizens. “This is the ninth ICE shooting this year. ICE shot a woman multiple times in Chicago,” he explained. “They claimed she shot them. They arrested her and were going to press charges, but guess what? They had to drop the charges because they lied about what happened in the incident.”
“So now there’s a clear record. It happened in Los Angeles. It happened in Chicago. It happened in Washington, D.C.,” Hayes continued. “For the record, they have been caught blatantly lying about their interactions with the public in court and in venue after venue.”
In response to Hayes’ comments, Colbert asked Minnesota officials if there was a way for Minnesota officials to “effectively” investigate the incident themselves. “Our jurisdiction is extremely tight,” Hayes responded. “Under U.S. jurisprudence, all law enforcement officers enjoy what is known as qualified immunity, which makes it difficult for them to face civil or criminal liability for the use of force.”
He then noted that this has happened before, particularly after the disastrous 1992 raid on Ruby Ridge during President Bill Clinton’s administration, but said Minnesota officials would have to clear a “very high bar” to hold the ICE agents involved accountable. Still, he said that appears to be the plan of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and state Attorney General Keith Ellison.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of pressure on a lot of people who see the tape as cold-blooded murder to have some kind of judicial accountability,” Hayes added, going on to criticize the Trump administration for holding it to a different standard than other administrations.
“Yesterday’s headlines popped up in my feed [said] “The president of the United States has threatened the Iranian government with military action if they kill peaceful protesters,” Hayes said. “I think we all understand that killing peaceful protesters is a sign that the government is seriously wrong. Here’s a 37-year-old mother with her partner and dog in her car documenting what ICE is doing.” Now, they want to call her a domestic terrorist. “
“Everyone gets to decide whether a 37-year-old mother takes her child with her [stuffed animals] Domestic terrorist or not,” the MS NOW anchor continued. “To me, she looked like a peaceful protester, but she was dead. “
Hayes ultimately concluded: “A people who govern this country by one principle and one principle only: What can we get away with? Everything else is backfill.”
