Kansas City Chiefs linebackers coach Brendan Dailey recently spoke with reporters about the development of undrafted rookie linebacker Cooper McDonald.
“I like Cooper (McDonald) a lot, he’s done some really fun (and) positive things. In the preseason, I thought he did a really good job, and again, you can see how we feel about him being able to make our roster,” Dailey said. “He had some really good plays on special teams. I don’t want to speak for (assistant head coach and special teams coordinator) Dave Toub and that aspect, but I thought he did a good job there.”

During his collegiate career, McDonald totaled 137 tackles, eight sacks, seven passes defensed and one forced fumble in 48 games over five seasons.
“He’s in a similar role to Jeff (Barca) in that he’s not being asked to play great defense out there, but he’s out there early every day with Jeff,” Daley said. “He’s playing a different role than Jeff, but he’s done a really good job of mentally getting himself up to speed in a number of different positions that he could be in. That’s impressive. I certainly think he has a bright future — they (Cooper McDonald and Jeffrey Barca) are those guys.”
In addition to his special teams work, McDonald will likely continue to see more snaps throughout the remainder of the season. The Chiefs coaching staff is evaluating multiple possibilities going forward.
