Chemical fire causes evacuation in Clayton County

An evacuation order was issued after a chemical fire broke out in Forest Park on Thursday.

Forest Park Police and Fire Departments responded to a commercial fire at 71 Barnett Road. The fire was under control around 11:28 a.m., but a shelter-in-place order was issued within a half-mile of the incident.

Roadblocks are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to operate safely.

Clayton County Fire Chief Tim Sweat said the fire broke out at the Polynt Composites USA plastics processing center and was brought under control at about 12:16 p.m.

Fire officials said in a statement that the incident involved multiple hazardous materials and required careful monitoring and coordination among agencies.

There were no reports of injuries.

The Clayton County Fire Department said the fire appeared to originate on the third floor of the building and a sprinkler system was activated to assist firefighters in extinguishing the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
