Champions League Matchday Preview: Bayern Munich vs. Atalanta

In the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, Bayern Munich defeated Atalanta 6-1, and the outcome was decided. Record master. Bayern will play the second leg without Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise due to accumulation of yellow cards. With all four Bayern goalkeepers missing through injury, Vincent Kompany must choose between Bayern’s second-teamer Janis Bartel and U-19’s Leonard Prescott.

Atalanta are winless in the club’s last five games, but it’s worth noting that their last win was a 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the Champions League knockout round. If Atalanta haven’t closed the five-goal deficit, they’ll give Bayern their all in the first half and then make some strategic long-term decisions in the second half.

Bayern won 3-2. There will be plenty of defensive failures due to heavy rotations and a lack of chemistry. Both teams scored from free kicks in the first half. Bayern, with a five-goal lead, would concede a goal on the counterattack in the second half. Lennart Karl and Luis Dias each scored in the second half to send Bayern into the quarter-finals as Atalanta began to push forward.
