CBS Morning Show Anchor Reportedly ‘Axed’ as Network Cuts Continue

CBS continues its firing spree, firing another high-profile broadcaster. cbs morning show anchor Elaine QuijanoThe New York City weekend morning anchor has been fired as part of widespread layoffs.

The network announced on March 20 that it was laying off approximately 6% of its workforce, affecting 60 to 70 jobs. In addition, the network will close CBS Radio, which has been on the air for 100 years.

The New York Post reports that Elaine, who is Filipino-American, is no longer employed by CBS. She covers breaking news and politics extensively for the network.

Elaine became the first Asian American general election debate moderator when she moderated the 2016 vice presidential debate. She also worked at digital network CBSN.

Other anchors and reporters fired include Omar Villafranca, a reporter in Dallas; Nidia Cavazos, a reporter in Los Angeles; Andres Gutierrez, a reporter in Las Vegas; Dave Malkoff, a national reporter; and Karen Hua, a national reporter based in Houston.

The Washington, D.C., bureau has laid off five staff members, including Nick Kurtz and political reporter Hunter Woodall.

“Today we are reducing the size of our staff, and affected employees will be notified by the end of the day,” said Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski. “We recognize this is a difficult time for those who are leaving CBS News. Because they are more than just names on a roster. They are talented, committed colleagues who are critical to our success. We will treat them all with care and respect.”

The layoffs were due to changes in the news business and the need to adapt. “New audiences are emerging in new places and we are driving forward an ambitious program of growth and investment so that we can serve them,” said Barry and Tom. “This means some parts of our newsroom have to shrink to make room for what we have to build to stay competitive.”
