Cavs add star guard to injury report with broken finger

The Cleveland Cavaliers are playing some of their best games of the season, but may hit another roadblock.

James Harden’s right thumb was wrapped during his postgame interview after his team’s win over the New York Knicks. Now we know why.

Harden injured his right thumb on Tuesday, the team announced Wednesday afternoon. X-ray showed a nondisplaced fracture of the distal phalanx. Harden will undergo treatment and is questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

A nondisplaced fracture is when a bone breaks but the bone does not shift or move. It’s still there. And the break occurs at the tip of the thumb, which is better than breaking lower.

The severity of the fracture will determine how long full recovery takes. It can heal completely in two weeks, maybe closer to four weeks.

Now, considering Harden was listed as doubtful heading into Wednesday’s game, it’s an option that he might try to play this one out. He can do this with a brace.

It’s also worth pointing out that Harden is left-handed. The injury was to his non-dominant hand, which was obviously the better option.

The Cavaliers are still figuring out how best to play with Harden, and they don’t have much time to figure it all out with just 23 games remaining. For a team trying to bounce back, missing a few weeks due to injury will be costly.

At the same time, the Cavaliers need to be fully healthy heading into the playoffs. This team is unlikely to reach its ultimate goal. Both methods have pros and cons.

Harden has played seven games for the Cavaliers. He averaged 18.9 points and 8 assists per game, shooting 0.494/0.488/0.867 from the field.
