Representative Kevin Kelly (R-CA) announced that he will ditch the Republican Party and become an independent, effective immediately.

“Today, I’m asking the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives to reflect this in the official roster,” Axios Congressional Correspondent Kate Santalitz reported on Monday. Keeley will still caucus with Republicans, meaning the House majority will not change.

Keeley announced on Friday that he would seek re-election as a “nonpartisan” candidate, calling gerrymandering a “plague on democracy, the plague that Gavin Newsom brought back to California.”

Back in December, Kelly lamented on Fox News that he didn’t know where he would vote after the Golden State’s redistricting plan “split my district into six different parts.” Kelly is currently running in California’s 6th Congressional District, which is extremely Democratic.

This is a developing story and has been updated.
