The DMV is often frustrating, but it’s an unavoidable scourge for most of us when it’s time to renew our driver’s license. The first licenses were issued in 1903, when Massachusetts and Missouri enacted the first laws requiring licensing. California followed a decade later and began issuing driver’s licenses in 1913, but it wasn’t until 1927 that a test was required to obtain the now-coveted paperwork. Now, for the first time in more than seven years, the Golden State is revamping the design of state-issued driver’s licenses, and it’s not just a design.
To help prevent counterfeiting, state licenses now have a digital security signature on one of two barcodes on the back. California was one of the first states to adopt such a deterrent measure. The state has also eliminated the magnetic strip on the back of the card. California last made security changes to its licenses in 2010, and the strips are outdated and vulnerable to hackers.
In addition to new safety features, the permit’s design now showcases California’s natural beauty. Redwood trees, poppies, and shorelines replaced the old themes of sailing ships and prospectors prospecting for gold. The state will begin issuing the new cards in October 2025, but California residents don’t need to rush to the DMV — their current driver’s licenses will still be valid.

Change new design

Most drivers in California require a simple non-commercial Class C driver’s license, even for most large RVs and campers (but motorcyclists require a different license). Although the state redesigned driver’s licenses, driver’s licenses with the old design are still valid until the expiration date printed on the license. In fact, California DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized that residents do not need to rush to replace their driver’s licenses with new versions. At that time, the cost to renew a driver’s license will be $45, while a state ID card with the same design will cost $39.
But travelers should remember that starting in May 2025, a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, U.S. passport or military identification card will be required for domestic flights and entry to military bases and some federal facilities. If you have not upgraded to a REAL ID and plan to travel or enter one of these locations and do not have another valid form of ID, you will need to upgrade to a new driver’s license.
The California DMV encourages customers to visit its website before going to a DMV office. Many transactions, including driver’s license renewals, can be completed online at dmv.ca.gov, But if you are applying for REAL ID for the first time, you will need to go to a physical location.
