Brendan McCullum expressed excitement over England’s bid for a third World T20 title and claimed the team had shown the crucial tactical flexibility required in the tournament, which could determine his coaching future.
The recent tour of Sri Lanka has been a huge confidence booster for the team, which saw them win 2-1 in the one-day international series against a team that had previously won seven 50-over series at home, followed by a comprehensive sweep in the T20s.

After the 3-0 T20 win in Kandy, McCullum admitted the difficulty of the game, with his position under scrutiny following the disastrous Ashes campaign.
“I’m excited about the World Cup and what it demands,” he said. “We’ve had to be very smart about the different opposition and conditions we’ve faced, but are really excited about the results it’s brought.”
He added that he was “very pleased with the work we have done so far, the way we have been able to adapt to different conditions, the style we bring and the tactical acumen we have shown.”

With the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, McCullum expects to face significant challenges but remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.
A key factor in their potential success is the performance of their spin attack. In the third T20 match in Sri Lanka, England spinners took 9 wickets in a 12-innings victory, with Adil Rashid consistently performing well throughout the tour.
He has strong support from Liam Dawson, Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell, with Rehan Ahmed also waiting in the wings.
McCullum highlighted the tactical intelligence shown by his team, particularly in the final T20 matches.

“Tonight was another example of the team being prepared to change tactics and respond to situations as needed,” he explained.
“To bowl 16 overs of spin, you need to defend a low total on the third pitch.
“When you look at it from a coaching perspective, it’s very satisfying for the team to acknowledge that and go all out to execute that strategy and invest in it because you know they’re trying to deal with the difficulties that are ahead of us and we’re going to need that over the next period of time.”
