The Atlanta Braves had a very active first day of spring training, with the team announcing late at night that it had reacquired infielder Brett Wisely, who was with the team through the end of the 2025 season, in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations. The Braves traded Wiseley to the Rays earlier this offseason when he was designated for assignment by Atlanta. Tampa Bay recently designated him for assignment.
The unfortunate news is that a corresponding roster change is that reliever Joe Jimenez has been placed on the 60-day IL due to cartilage issues in his left joint. Jimenez missed the entire 2025 season, and his status in 2026 was in question for much of the offseason.
Wisely adding depth to the Braves’ infield and utility positions, starting shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is expected to miss much of the first half of the season. The team added infielder Kyle Farmer last week after signing infielder Jorge Mateo last month. The team also re-signed Luke Williams to a minor league deal. Mauricio Dubon, who is expected to play a super utility role, will be the team’s starting shortstop.

As for losing Jimenez, the Braves added significant bullpen depth this offseason, with Robert Suarez a big-name free agent signing, joining depth options like Ian Hamilton, Joel Payapos and the likely return of James Kalinchak. The team brings back closer Raisel Iglesias and reliever Tyler Kinley.
