The Knicks suffered a broken ankle in the Denver Nuggets’ victory over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs last weekend, and Payton told members of the media that the Knicks are prone to injury and that it will eventually happen one way or another.
Asked if he was worried about the Knicks having had multiple ankle surgeries during his career, Payton responded: “What’s found is a pre-existing condition – they’re always going to find out more when they go in. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. When you look at the play and try to evaluate it, the doctors, the surgeons, all said it was going to happen sooner or later.”
In his first public comments since the injury, Knicks pushed back on his coach’s assertion that the injury was inevitable.
“[But] “There was no warning, nothing that was pre-existing,” Nix said of the injury. “It can be confusing. As soon as I take a simple step with my foot in the air, my weight just lands on it and kind of twists. … It could have been a worse landing, but I think all the strength went into the only place it could go.”

Nix later questioned his coach for publicly misrepresenting his surgical history.
“Honestly, I don’t think he really should have shared how many surgeries I’ve had in the past — he doesn’t even know that,” Nix said. “But it’s good to be back, to get back to work…There’s nothing that really worries me and there’s nothing that scares me going forward.”
Clearly, Nix was annoyed or troubled by his coach’s comments and the fact that they were made public, otherwise he would not have commented in such a manner.

Eventually, when training camp begins, this may be subsided and forgotten. However, it’s also possible that this could start to sow the seeds of distrust between the Knicks and Payton, and ultimately cause their relationship to sour.
Which one will it be? Only time will tell. Obviously, Broncos fans are hoping it turns out to be the former.
