Oregon Potato Co., Salem, Ore., is recalling 55,689 pounds of “Individually Quick Frozen” (IQF) blueberries produced by Willamette Valley Fruit Co. due to possible Listeria monocytogenes Contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The fruit is sold in 30-pound corrugated boxes and 1,400-pound totes. According to FDA regulations, these blueberries are not sold directly from retail stores to consumers, but are distributed to Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and Canada. Oregon Potato Company distributes products to foodservice, retail, industrial and international businesses.
The lot numbers and corresponding expiration dates for the 30-pound cases are 2055 B2 and 7/23/2027, 2065 B1 and 7/24/2027, 2065 B3 and 7/24/2027, while the lot numbers and dates for the 1,400-pound totes are 3305 A1 and 11/25/2027 3305 B1 and 11/25/2027 Day.
The FDA labeled the recall a Class I, which means there is a “reasonable likelihood” that the product “will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” It’s not known whether blueberries cause any illness.
Listeria monocytogenesThe bacterium is commonly found in soil, water or food processing environments and can survive and grow in refrigerated conditions, the FDA said.
Healthy people may only experience short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection; however, the FDA reports that it may cause miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women. It can also cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems. If you develop symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider.
