The southern half of Minnesota is bracing for what could be the “biggest snowstorm of the season,” with accumulations of up to a foot possible.
That’s according to the National Weather Service, which says a winter system will develop in Minnesota Saturday night into Sunday night, bringing heavy snow to southern Minnesota and even the Twin Cities.
As it stands, uncertainty remains about the system’s ultimate trajectory, with current forecasts showing a possible gradient in the Twin Cities region, with a lower gradient to the north and a higher gradient to the south.
The highest snowfall amounts are currently expected in the southern metro areas and southeastern Minnesota, with the NWS estimating a greater than 70% chance of 6 or more inches of snow.

The system is expected to develop slowly over the state, which will result in “larger bands of precipitation and significantly higher precipitation amounts within the colder air mass,” according to the National Weather Service’s forecast discussion.
“There are also more consistent signals of high snowfall amounts, particularly in the southern half of our coverage area. While it is too early to determine specific snowfall amounts across the entire coverage area, we are increasingly confident that the central and southern parts of our coverage area will receive over 6 inches of snow, with a band of 8-12 inches possible across the southern half of our coverage area,” it continued.
“Most of the snowfall will occur Saturday night into Sunday morning,
And there will be strong winds…which will cause blowing snow and reduced visibility. “
The National Weather Service said a blizzard warning is possible due to a combination of heavy snow and high winds.
Minnesota has issued a wind warning as another winter system moves through the state on Friday, with heavy snow expected in northern Minnesota and wind gusts up to 60 mph in west-central and southern Minnesota.
A winter storm warning has been issued for northeastern Minnesota, with more than a foot of snow possible on the North Shore.
