Barcelona thrashed Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, a day after Real Madrid defeated local rivals Atletico Madrid 2-1 to set up a El Clasico finals.

Originally a showdown between the Copa del Rey and La Liga champions, it has been expanded to four teams, including the last Copa del Rey finalists as well as the La Liga champions and runners-up.

Lamine Yamal is well ahead but Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford have made outstanding contributions, Robert Lewandowski has scored 945 goals in just 9 minutes and top scorer Ferran Torres is the top scorer. There have been four question marks lately, although the fact that Kylian Mbappe is heading to Jeddah is a good new one as he is not expected to feature in the Spanish Super Cup. Antonio Rudiger (knee), Marco Asensio (knock) and Rodrygo (hamstring) are other concerns.

Mbappe has scored 29 goals in 24 games this season, no other player has more than five, so he will be a big help. Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler both have double-digit goal contributions, but apart from Mbappe, the offensive power is not outstanding this season. Jude Bellingham has scored one goal and provided one assist in his last three games but has been a disappointment so far this season as he has been living off his reputation since an incredible season in Spain in 2023-24.

The cliche “anything can happen” seems apt here, with Barca having an extra day’s rest after a comfortable win that gave them an advantage before even considering Real Madrid’s injury situation. Xabi Alonso can win a win and a trophy, but maybe now is not his time. Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid.
