Baldur’s Gate 3 Final Patch Brings Cross Play, Photo Mode and More as Larian Moves on to Next Project

Baldur’s Gate 3, a groundbreaking role-playing game released in 2023, has received its final patch, which adds new content to the game for the last time. Developer Larian Studios has rolled out patch 8 for the game, which includes long-requested features such as cross-play support across all platforms, new subclasses, photo mode, and split-screen functionality on Xbox Series S. In patch notes released on Tuesday, Larian said that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not receive new content as the studio shifts its focus to its next project.

Baldur’s Gate 3 8th Edition

“This is it. Our last major gameplay patch for Baldur’s Gate 3,” Larian told the Baldur’s Gate 3 community in the patch notes.

“You’ve helped us make BG3 a bigger success than any of us could have ever hoped for, and that enthusiasm could keep us tweaking things and making changes until the end of time. But then we’d never be able to create something new,” the studio said.

Larian confirmed that the 8th Edition patch will be the final update for the game, adding story content or making significant changes to the story and characters. However, patches to fix minor bugs may still be rolled out.

“Apart from minor bug fixes, the 8th Edition patch will be the last game patch to introduce new content. This means we won’t be adding any new narrative content or making major changes to the storyline, Origins characters, or companions,” Larian said. “We tell our stories the way we need to and try to make them impactful and engaging, and we’ll continue to get better at handling our own messes so that we can continue to create more messes in the future.”

Patch 8 details

Patch 8 adds the final round of gameplay content to Baldur’s Gate 3, in addition to numerous bug fixes and improvements. Highlights include 12 new subclasses with new abilities, animations, VFX, and more; full cross-play across PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X; detailed photo mode; support for Steam Trading Cards; and split-screen support on Xbox Series S. The latter is a long-requested feature that delayed the release of Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian had issues getting the split-screen feature to work on the underpowered Xbox Series S.

The patch also brings a host of bug fixes, modding tool updates, and extensive gameplay improvements.

Larian says that as updates for its critically acclaimed role-playing game come to an end, the focus is now on the next project.

“Your feedback has been important to us from the beginning and will continue to influence our future projects. As Swen said during the Baldur’s Gate 3 review panel at PAX West last August, it’s time for the team to get back into our caves and hang the armor on the walls while we focus on bringing you our next project,” the studio said.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released in 2023 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The role-playing game received critical acclaim and sold over 15 million copies. The game won several year-end awards and was named Game of the Year at the 2023 Game Awards.
