Aubrey Pleasant passed over for another defensive coordinator job

Rams assistant head coach and passing game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant is likely to return to Sean McVay’s coaching staff in 2026.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, three of the four defensive coordinator positions Pleasant interviewed for have been filled after the Las Vegas Raiders promoted defensive line coach to the position. Pleasant interviewed for the position last week, having previously spoken with the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers about the then-vacant job. Both teams are heading in different directions.

That means only the defensive coordinator role with the Cleveland Browns remains open to Pleasant. It’s unclear if he’s a contender for the job, but the Browns reportedly plan to interview Texans passing game coordinator Corey Undlin this week, while Browns linebackers coach Jason Tarver and Falcons passing game coordinator Mike Rutenberg are also in the running, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

If Pleasant stays, he’ll rejoin a staff that’s essentially the same as the one that makes the NFC Championship Game in 2025. Pass passing coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase and defensive coordinator Chris Shula also return after not being hired by other teams. The only major coach to leave is offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who is now the Cardinals’ head coach.
