The Houston Astros haven’t done anything this offseason, and it’s looking increasingly likely that Flamber Valdez will leave. Unless Houston has a plan, this will be a worse team without Valdez. However, other areas need help, including the area behind the plate.

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter noted that the backup catcher position is one of the few remaining positions Houston could look to add to, with Jonah Haim a possible target.

Haim, a former World Series champion and All-Star with the Texas Rangers, will bring a player who can be a starter.

“Assuming the Astros’ options in center field and right field (Jesus Sanchez, Jake Meyers, Cam Smith and Zach Cole) and Nos. 3, 4 and 5 in the rotation No. 1 position (Mike Burrows, Ryan Weis, Lance McCullers Jr., Jason Alexander, Nate Pearson and Spencer Arletti) is satisfied, then only backup receivers may be left on the offseason shopping list. A reunion with Victor Caratini remains a possibility, while Jonah Haim and Reese McGuire are also possible,” Reuters wrote.

At times in his career, Haim has been really, really good. He was an All-Star in 2023 and won a Gold Glove.

Fast forward to 2025, and he’s frankly brutal, posting a 77 OPS+. However, even if he continues to struggle offensively, he has shown that he can command a team, which is important.
