Anson County rail crossing to close permanently for safety upgrade

Starting Monday, the railroad crossing at Roseright Road in Polkton will be permanently closed as part of the Polkton Rail Siding Expansion Project.

The initiative is designed to improve rail safety and efficiency while reducing rail congestion along the CSX SF Line and Queen City Express between Charlotte and Wilmington.

Other improvements proposed for the project include extending the track along the south side of the railroad, between Liberty Road and the east side of the Boston Avenue Bridge.

In addition to the siding extension, future infrastructure development is planned, including a new two-lane road connecting North Carolina Highway 218 to U.S. Highway 74. The new road will feature a new bridge to carry traffic over Peachland-Polkton Road and the railway, improving accessibility and traffic flow.

Right-of-way for the new road is scheduled to be acquired in 2029, with construction expected to begin in fiscal year 2032.

When completed, the project will also create two new intersections that will provide access to Peachland-Polkton Road and US 74, aiming to alleviate traffic issues at the existing intersections.
