MEXICO CITY (AP) — Former Atletico Madrid winger Angel Correa scored in the second half and the UANL Tigres beat defending champion Toluca 1-0 in the first leg of the Apetula final in Mexico on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Correa, who scored 88 goals and provided 65 assists in 469 games for Atletico Madrid, joined the Mexican team this summer and scored the winning goal in the 46th minute from a cross from former Real Betis player Diego Leinez.

The Argentine winger helped Atletico win the Spanish League title in 2020-21 and reach the Champions League final in 2016.
His last appearance for Atletico was in the Club World Cup, when the team failed to advance from the group.
The UANL Tigres are seeking their ninth league title and seventh since 2011, with a core of players including Argentinian goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman and former Marseille forward Andre-Pierre Gignac, among others.
The second leg will be played on Sunday at the Nemesio Diaz Stadium in Toluca, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Mexico City.
Toluca is targeting a 12th league title. The Red Devils are also trying to become the fourth team to win consecutive championships since 1996.
