Andy Carroll facing possible prison sentence

Former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll faces the possibility of jail after being accused of breaching a non-harassment order.

The 36-year-old man was arrested in April and will appear in court on Tuesday over the alleged offenses committed in March.

Details of the alleged crime cannot be reported for legal reasons. Earlier this month, reports emerged that an unnamed former Premier League footballer was arrested at the airport in front of other passengers after returning to the UK.

After he was charged, police have now identified the man as Carroll.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “A man has been charged with breaching a non-harassment order. Andrew Carroll, 36, from Epping, was arrested on April 27 and charged with offenses related to an incident in March. He will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on December 30.”

A non-molestation order is a civil court injunction that is primarily designed to prevent one person from approaching another person, a specific address, or both.

Depending on the circumstances, breaching such an order is a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison.

Carroll returned to English football this summer after a spell with French club Bordeaux, joining National League side Dagenham and Redbridge.

Last month he was fined for using his mobile phone to film an anti-immigration protest while driving, with hundreds of people outside the Epping Bell Hotel, where asylum seeker Hadush Kebatu was accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl. Kebatu was later jailed.
