Adam Schefter says it’s a ‘long shot’ that Fred Warner plays again this year

ESPN’s Adam Schefter appeared on The Pat McAfee Show to provide some injury expectations for George Kittle and Trent Williams:

Kittle will try to return next week. He didn’t test at all last week. They won’t play him on Sunday night. He’s out. He’ll have a chance to return next week against Seattle on Saturday night.

Trent Williams exited the game and did not return. He’s older, an older player. Tough on the hamstrings. I think if you’re a 49ers player, you might want to see if you can say goodbye. Give him two weeks of rest and bring him back if possible.

Again, we’ll see how the hamstring feels this week. See if he has a chance. I thought it would be difficult to come back in a short week with a hamstring injury that kept me out of the game.

This is the best part about the 49ers. They gave him veteran rest days during the season. So, another left tackle they brought in last night, he’s used to it. He’s not Trent Williams; he’s Trent Williams. No one is. But at least he got some reps during the season as they gave him an off day during Trent Williams’ practice week.

Austin Pleasant excels in pass protection and is far from a liability against the running backs. He allowed two pressures and one sack. The 49ers only ran the ball down the side and left side five times. They gained 21 yards on those plays and gained 10 yards rushing.

But there’s a difference going against Austin Booker and DeMarcus Lawrence. That’s what Pleasant will face in Week 18.

Schefter continued, this time regarding the possible return of Fred Warner:

He’s been talking about it on his podcast for the past week. John Lynch said he had a chance. My understanding is that his chances of playing this season are slim, but it would be a great thing for him to continue to work hard and fight. I would never put anything past that person. He’s as impressive as they come.

If anyone can come back, that guy certainly can. Everyone will be happy to see it. Again, the people I spoke to told me it was unlikely. We’ll see if they can pull it off. They have to advance in the playoffs. He must continue to make tremendous progress.

It reminds me of Aiden Hutchinson last year in Detroit. Same thing, there’s a lot of talk about it. Ultimately, it didn’t happen. It would be great if you could. I feel like this is where we’ll be here. But for Fred Warner, anything was possible.

It sounds like we could be bowing out for Warner’s return this season.
