ACC Roundup – Virginia, Miami Get Big Wins

Tuesday’s game was more or less as expected. Clemson defeated Boston College 74-50, Miami defeated Notre Dame 81-69, Syracuse defeated Florida State 94-86, and Virginia defeated Louisville 79-70.

Honestly, we’re not sure what to expect from Louisville, and with Mikel Brown still out, it hurts. But Virginia led 14-0 and was never in that much trouble. This contest is hosted at Yum! Center, heart.

Thijs De Ridder was great for Virginia, but here he ran into foul trouble, scoring just 3 points on 10 shots and missing all of his 3-point attempts.

However, Malik Thomas made up for it, scoring 19 points, including 6 of 8 three-pointers. Johann Grunloh had 4 blocks and Ugonna Onyenso had 3 blocks.

Isaac McKneely, who left Virginia at the end of last season, contributed 23 points for the Cards, but his shooting percentage was not particularly good, shooting 5-for-14 from three-point range. Better than Ryan Conwell, who shot 5-21/3-12.

We didn’t realize that Carney Rose was also absent, apparently ill.

Notre Dame pressured Miami in the first half before the Canes fought back. Aside from Jalen Harrison’s free throw at 18:03, the Irish didn’t hit a basket until Haralson scored at the rim at 15:14. At this time, the Heat had established a 12-point lead (the score was chased to 10 points under the basket), and the game was basically over.

Tre Donaldson scored 23 points to lead the Miami Heat, while Shelton Henderson and Malik Reanu added 17 points each.

With the win over Notre Dame, Miami’s win streak now reaches double digits at 10 games, and it’s fair to say that at 15-2, the Hurricanes are one of the hottest teams in the league.

Talk about getting hot! Nick Davidson made it 21 straight in the first half for Clemson. We don’t think BC really has a great chance, but Davidson is so popular? Not on the bingo card.

He personally outscored the Eagles 21-9 in that game, and the guy didn’t even start. Wow.

He finished with 25 points.

Boston College continued to struggle offensively, shooting just 5-for-15 (33%) from three-point range, 47 points on 20-for-20 shooting overall (43%), and a very poor 5-for-13 free throw shooting (38%).

It looks like it’s going to be another long season in BC, but Clemson is slowly climbing up and is currently ranked 22nd. They play Miami on Saturday and that’s going to be an absolutely great game.

In the end, although Florida State got off to a strong start, leading 11-3, Syracuse fought back and caught up five minutes into the game, trailing 13-12 on a Donnie Freeman dunk.

Tyler Betsey hit a three-pointer to give Syracuse a final 40-36 lead. Still, Florida State deserves credit for not giving up. Syracuse led by 10 points, but FSU fought back to take the lead again, 65-64.

After some back and forth, Syracuse once again took the lead for good. Florida State lost but showed a lot of grit.

Donnie Freeman did a lot of damage with 25 points on 9-12/1-3 shooting. He also had 8 rebounds. William Kyle, who wasn’t always a huge offensive threat, scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting. He also has 9 boards. JJ Starling shot 7-10/0-1.

Overall, Syracuse went 11-27 (41%) from 3-point range and 37-62 (60%) overall. Generally speaking, if you shoot that well, you should have an easier time winning.

Kobe Magee scored 20 points for FSU and Martin Somerville added 18 points off the bench.

On Wednesday, Pitt will visit Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech will travel to Dallas to play SMU, and Duke and UNC will fly to California to play Cal and Stanford, respectively.
