A person is in custody after deadly Brown University shooting leaves 2 dead, 9 wounded

Rhode Island State Police say they have a suspect in custody following a shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured.

The incident occurred in a classroom during final exams on Saturday afternoon.

The shooting paralyzed the campus, with students sheltering in place for hours. Nine students with gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital, including one in critical condition. An FBI agent said the arrest was made at a hotel in Coventry, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Providence.

Authorities still haven’t found the gun.

According to a law enforcement official, the gunman was armed with a handgun and fired more than 40 rounds of 9 mm bullets.

As of Sunday morning, authorities had not recovered a gun but did find two loaded 30-round magazines, the official said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the findings publicly.

The remaining courses and exams of this semester are canceled

Classes and exams have been cancelled. University officials also said students are free to leave.

Provost Francis Doyle said in a statement that services and support will be available to those who remain on campus.

“At this time, we must focus on providing care and support to our community members in response to the grief, fear and anxiety that currently affects us all,” Doyle wrote.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, one of the leading Democrats on gun policy, said Sunday that the prospect of new restrictions on guns is “distinct.”

“Unfortunately, as far as we know, Republicans in Congress have never really broken with this president,” Murphy said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” arguing that Trump and the Republican Party were too aligned with the gun lobby.

Murphy added: “That doesn’t mean I won’t try.”
