A New God of War ‘Side-Story Project’ Set in Greek Mythology Is Reportedly Coming in 2025

A new God of War game, possibly a smaller spin-off set in the series’ original Greek mythology, is said to be launching later this year. The rumor comes as the iconic PlayStation series celebrates its 20th anniversary, with a new free update for God of War Ragnarok to mark the occasion. God of War developer Santa Monica Studio has been tight-lipped about its next project since the release of God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC in 2023, but there are rumors that the studio is developing remakes of older games in the series.

However, the latest claims state that God of War will have a new “side story project” that will likely return to the series’ original Greek setting. Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb says a new Gods of War game will be released sometime in 2025, rather than the rumored remaster of the old game.

“Everyone’s been asking this question, so I’m trying to find out more information: There’s still a God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remake series. It’s a new side story project,” Grubb said on Bluesky on Sunday.

OK Everyone keeps asking this question, so I tried to find out more information: There’s still a Greek God of War title coming out this year, but it’s not a remastered collection. This is a new side story project.

He also claimed that he has yet to receive information about the remastered collection, but sources say a God of War announcement could come around the series’ 20th anniversary.

“I’d never heard of the remastered series, but I asked sources about the rumors (which I saw were mostly focused on the series) and they told me that nothing would be happening with God of War at State of Play, but there might be something coming for the anniversary,” Grubb said.

Santa Monica has yet to announce its next game and the future of the God of War series. God of War Ragnarok marks the end of the Norse saga that began with 2018’s God of War. However, Santa Monica creative director Corey Balog has previously said the show may touch on other popular myths.

Sony also celebrated the series’ 20th anniversary on March 22. The PlayStation parent company has released a free update for Ragnarok to mark the occasion, along with new merchandise, exhibits, and more. The Dark Odyssey Collection update adds new player skins, weapon skins and attachments, armor sets, and more to God of War Ragnarok.

Despite the 20th anniversary, Sony has yet to announce plans for the next God of War. In January, the company canceled two projects in development for its live service, one of which was said to be a God of War game.

Santa Monica is also reportedly developing a new IP. While the studio’s projects have yet to be confirmed, LinkedIn profiles of developers working at the Santa Monica studio mention that the studio is working on a new IP.
