Tech companies have poured billions of dollars into artificial intelligence this year as artificial intelligence and data centers boom.
But an Amazon employee union said the company’s use of AI comes amid rising global temperatures, political instability and “a more militarized surveillance state that offers less protection for ordinary people,” Fortune reported.
They said they saw the company push them to adopt artificial intelligence at a “warp speed” while straying away from environmental goals.
What happened?
More than 1,000 Amazon employees signed a letter to CEO Andy Jassy and senior leadership, Fortune reported. The employees, who include people in positions as diverse as cashiers and IT support, said Amazon is forcing teams to use unnecessary tools and is cutting jobs while plowing money into artificial intelligence.
Amazon disputes suggestions it has abandoned its sustainability commitments. The company told Fortune that it believed the concerns “ignored the facts,” pointing to its investments in renewable energy, including more than 600 renewable energy projects and an advanced nuclear energy agreement.
Why is this letter important?
Amazon’s environmental footprint is directly related to pollution from transportation, data centers and product manufacturing. Traffic-related pollution accounts for more than 16% of global emissions of planet-warming gases, according to Our World in Data, while Amazon’s data shows its annual pollution emissions have increased by 6% since last year, according to Fortune.
The letter warns that the reintroduction of the AI-based “Ring Doorbell” police video request tool would give government agencies and companies huge powers to move forward without safeguards.
Employees also believe that the more Amazon leans toward AI expansion, the more energy and infrastructure the company will consume. They note that while AI is being rolled out rapidly, leadership is cutting jobs and asking those who remain to deliver more output.
This all comes as other analysts say Big Tech’s investments in artificial intelligence are pushing the industry in a worrying direction. A Goldman Sachs expert says today’s AI spending is a shift from the past 30 years that was not seen in previous tech booms.
What is Amazon doing with its use of artificial intelligence?
According to the letter, Amazon employees called on Amazon to detail a public plan to use renewable energy to power data centers and give employees a say in deciding how artificial intelligence is used across the company. They also demand a commitment from leadership that Amazon’s artificial intelligence will not be used for violence, surveillance or mass deportations.
For employees seeking to influence company decisions, advocating for better environmental standards internally is one way employees can push for more responsible, beneficial choices in the workplace.
That’s the goal in the letter from Amazon employees, seeking to keep AI’s priority on making life easier, rather than increasing surveillance or risking deepening financial and environmental harm.
