A Michigan mom allowed the family of one of her daughter’s friends to live on a school bus parked at her home, but she no longer has access to her home.

Kandie Sherman of Vassar, Michigan, told CBS affiliate WNEM that she allowed her family to live in a car parked near her home for six weeks in October.

However, the men allegedly still didn’t leave and even filed a personal protection order against the mother when she tried to evict them, meaning Sherman had to stay away from the bus and, by extension, her home.

“I feel frustrated, helpless and angry,” Sherman told WNEM. “I graciously allowed a family to park their bus on my land because they said they could support themselves. They were supposed to leave within six weeks but they refused to leave.”

After Sherman served the family with an eviction notice, they received a personal protection order (PPO) obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE and claimed the homeowner had been stalking them.

Sherman told WNEM she will now have to sleep in her car until the legal process is completed.

WNEM reported that a resident on the bus said Sherman gave them permission in writing to stay.

Sherman’s neighbors also complained about the bus to the city of Vassar, the outlet reported.

Police Chief and Interim City Manager Ben Guile told the Bay City, Mich., Police Department that passengers on the bus violated two city orders by parking the commercial vehicle in a residential area and living in the commercial vehicle.

“They’re apparently having some mechanical issues and are currently unable to move,” Gur told the outlet. “So, we’re talking to them to get a timeline for removing the buses.”

Preliminary information is that they establish some kind of residency there by being there for a certain amount of time, receiving mail there, things of that nature,” the chief continued. “When someone does that, they gain residency. This makes it more difficult to remove someone. This is no longer ‘get off my property’ but an eviction process. “

Gulay added that both sides should “become adults” and “come up with a plan that satisfies everyone.”

“It may not be on the timeline you want, but if we can give the people on the buses the time they need to repair and move them, we can meet the city’s need for bus removal, which will satisfy the needs of property owners who no longer need the buses on their property,” Guile explained.

Sherman told WNEM it would “feel really great” if the buses were removed.
