Sony may not hold a full PlayStation Showcase this summer, instead opting to hold a smaller State of Play event to share updates on upcoming games. The company has reportedly not yet finalized plans for a summer showcase event. The PlayStation parent company held a State of Play broadcast last week and revealed the next game from first-party studio Housemarque, in addition to third-party announcements.
2025 PlayStation Showcase
This information comes from Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb. According to him, Sony has not yet decided whether to hold a full PlayStation Showcase and State of Play demonstration in the summer of 2025.
“I think they seem to be debating internally between whether they can do a full showcase and another State of Play this summer. But they are considering doing a showcase,” Grubb said Friday on his Game Mess Decides podcast.
“If they have a reveal, that means they’ll have a lot to talk about. At that point, you’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing Wolverine and a lot of other games that may come out next year.”
PlayStation Showcase events are large-scale demo events that focus on first-party announcements and showcases. “State of the Game” broadcasts, on the other hand, are shorter and contain mostly third-party announcements. The PlayStation Showcase is typically held once a year, while the State of Play broadcasts are held three to four times a year.
Several of Sony’s first-party studios are currently working on their next projects – Naughty Dog finally announced its next game, Star: Oracle of Heretic, at the 2024 Game Awards in December, Insomniac Games is developing Wolverine, and Santa Monica has yet to announce its next game. Meanwhile, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, will be released in 2025.
However, Grubb said that Sony may still make some “interesting announcements” at this year’s game showcase event and start “increasing expectations for 2026.”
It’s also worth noting that the last PlayStation Showcase was held in 2023, with the headliner being Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which will launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on August 28, 2025. Sony also gave an in-depth introduction to the gameplay of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at the event.
Sony held a State of Play livestream last week, which featured mostly third-party trailers and announcements. However, the company did reveal the next first-party game from Returnal developer Housemarque. The studio is developing Saros, a third-person roguelike bullet hell action-adventure game expected to launch exclusively on PS5 in 2026.
