Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft’s upcoming action RPG set in Japan, appears to have been leaked. Some players have reportedly started playing the game early, and leaked gameplay footage has surfaced online. Physical copies of the game are said to have been sold nearly a month before the game’s scheduled release. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has been in trouble during its development period and has been pushed back twice to its current release date of March 20.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows leaked
On Sunday, a Reddit post on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours (spotted by Eurogamer ) claimed that the PS5 physical version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has gone on sale ahead of release. According to reports, the game will be fully playable for those who purchase the disc.
According to the post, Animus Anomalies, a mission type from older Assassin’s Creed games, are confirmed to be returning in Shadows. However, the post states that the game is an older version and no improvements have been made to it due to the delay.
Separately, an X user also claimed (via TheGamer) that they purchased a copy of the game on Facebook Marketplace and posted an image of the game’s installation screen online along with photos and videos of gameplay. Their posts have been deleted. However, the leaked images and videos continue to be reposted on X and elsewhere. An image shows that Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will take up 85GB of storage space on the PS5.
Some users have also reportedly started streaming games on Twitch (via VGC); these also appear to have been removed from the streaming platform. Ubisoft has yet to comment on the leak.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will be released on March 20 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The game was originally slated for release in November 2024, but was later pushed to February 14, 2025. Last month, Ubisoft delayed the release date for a second time to further refine the game.
Earlier this month, Ubisoft also confirmed encouraging pre-order numbers for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. The company said during its 2024-25 third-quarter earnings call that pre-orders for the game were in line with 2018’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, the second most successful game in the series.
