Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum on Friday condemned the deaths of three Mexican citizens this year after being detained by U.S. immigration authorities.
“This can’t happen,” Scheinbaum told reporters, referring to the death of a 19-year-old teenager at a Florida detention center on Monday, as well as two others who died earlier this year.
“The report is that the young man committed suicide,” Sheinbaum said. “Nonetheless, we expect a full investigation to be carried out.”
Royer Perez Jimenez was arrested in January and charged with misdemeanor fraud by impersonation and resisting an officer, ICE said in a statement CBS Miami reporting.
According to CBS Miami, he was found in his cell at the Glades County Detention Center at 2:34 a.m. local time on March 16. The agency said prison staff “immediately” began saving lives. ICE said the cause of death was “presumed to be suicide” but remains under investigation.
Other Mexicans killed in President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration include 34-year-old Heber Sanchez Domínguez in January. Dominguez was detained by ICE for six days after being arrested for driving without a license, and while awaiting a hearing, he was found “hanging by the neck and unconscious in a bedroom” at a facility in Georgia at about 2:05 a.m. local time, the Department of Homeland Security said. The Mexican government said Thursday that “these deaths have become unacceptable” and that officials “will not hesitate to use available legal and diplomatic tools to defend the rights of Mexicans abroad.”
“We will take every step to protest and provide families with all the support they need,” Sheinbaum said.
