Mexican president says citizen deaths in U.S. custody “can’t be happening”

Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum on Friday condemned the deaths of three Mexican citizens this year after being detained by U.S. immigration authorities.

“This can’t happen,” Scheinbaum told reporters, referring to the death of a 19-year-old teenager at a Florida detention center on Monday, as well as two others who died earlier this year.

“The report is that the young man committed suicide,” Sheinbaum said. “Nonetheless, we expect a full investigation to be carried out.”

Royer Perez Jimenez was arrested in January and charged with misdemeanor fraud by impersonation and resisting an officer, ICE said in a statement CBS Miami reporting.
