Is your hospital on the list? 14 N.J. facilities ranked safest in the nation.

According to Healthgrades’ 2026 America’s Safest Hospitals list, 14 New Jersey hospitals rank in the top 10 percent nationally for patient safety.

The list recognizes 438 hospitals from 40 states as recipients of the Patient Safety Excellence Award.

To receive the award, recipients must be in the top 80% of hospitals for clinical quality, have zero cases of foreign bodies left during surgeries, and have data on seven core patient safety metrics, such as postoperative sepsis or unintentional puncture rates.

Recipients have lower rates of preventable complications and adverse events compared with other hospitals.

According to Healthgrades, patients at award-winning facilities average:

  • A fall during hospitalization was 52.4% less likely to result in a fracture.

  • 57.5% less likely to have a collapsed lung due to surgery or surgery in or around the chest.

  • The likelihood of developing a catheter-related bloodstream infection in the hospital was reduced by 67.8%.

  • 71.9% were less likely to develop a pressure sore or bed sore in hospital.

“The data behind this year’s Patient Safety Excellence Awards highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications,” said Dr. Alana Biggers, Healthgrades medical advisor, in a press release. “Hospitals that prioritize evidence-based safety practices not only achieve better clinical outcomes but also foster a patient-first culture. These insights provide individuals and families with the information they need to make confident and more informed medical decisions.”
