ATLANTA — Georgia Tech fired head coach Damon Stoudemire on Sunday, one day after the Yellow Jackets’ season ended with 12 consecutive losses.
Georgia Tech athletic director Ryan Alpert made the decision after the Yellow Jackets fell to Clemson 79-76 on Saturday to go 11-20 overall and 2-16 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Yellow Jackets finished last in the conference and failed to qualify for the ACC Tournament as Stoudemire failed to address a late-season losing streak.
Stoudemire was fired after a 42-55 record in three seasons, including a 19-39 ACC record.
“On behalf of Georgia Tech, I want to thank Damon for his commitment to the college, our men’s basketball program, and most importantly, our student-athletes,” Alpert said in a statement released by the school. “He is highly respected and admired throughout the Georgia Tech community and has been a strong representative of the institute. We wish him the best.
“Georgia Tech men’s basketball has a proud history and is an important part of our athletic department and community. We are committed to identifying an outstanding basketball coach who will build a championship-caliber program, fulfill our mission of academic excellence, and prepare our student-athletes for life beyond basketball. Georgia Tech’s commitment to men’s basketball is unwavering, and we will devote the resources necessary to compete for championships at the highest level.”

Former Mercer assistant coach Greg Gary will serve as interim head coach.
Former NBA guard Stoudemire was hired on March 14, 2023, just three days after Josh Pastner was fired.
Stoudemire’s only previous head coaching experience was at Pacific School, a West Coast Conference school, where he compiled a 71-77 record during a five-year tenure. He never made the playoffs but was voted the league’s Coach of the Year in 2020.
Prior to being hired by Georgia Tech, Stoudemire had been an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics since 2021.
