A popular burger joint in eastern Raleigh, North Carolina, quickly closed this week after a brief stop on Hillsborough Street.
Barley & Burger closed permanently This week after just three months in business. The burger joint took over one of Hillsborough Street’s most prominent buildings, moving into the former Daryl’s restaurant. For 15 years, this space has most recently been David’s Dumplings.
Barley & Burger was founded in the Rockies by Brandon Clarke, Travis Ellis and novelist Etaf Rum. It also has offices in Smithfield and Charlotte. Barley & Burger also previously had a location at Selma’s Old North State Food Hall.
Landlord Tommy Carter confirmed the deal in a phone interview, saying the owners told him their plans two weeks ago and returned the space on Tuesday. By Wednesday, a “For Rent” sign hung in the window.
News of Barley & Burger closing in Raleigh was first reported by the Triangle Business Journal.
Barley & Burger just opened on Hillsborough Street in late November, moving into Raleigh’s historic restaurant district. Daryl’s is a beloved themed restaurant in Raleigh known for its over-the-top decor and infamous jail cell tables.
Also on the same block is legendary sports bar Players Retreat, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary and serves one of the city’s most popular burgers.
The owners did not respond to repeated requests for comment on the closing.
While Barley & Burger changed its signage and put its menu in the window, David’s Dumplings’ signage remains on the Hillsborough Street side of the restaurant. The ketchup and straws on the table inside were untouched.
