The Los Angeles Rams will have Matthew Stafford at quarterback…but only in 2026.

With the reigning MVP reportedly set to return in 2026 after considering retirement, we think Stafford’s NFL seasons are numbered, so the Rams must find his replacement.

The draft isn’t what the Rams are focused on this season. Instead, free agency could be a place where a young quarterback can develop behind Stafford and take over in 2027.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has once again been told he could seek a transfer elsewhere as a possible replacement for Stafford.

This time, NFL.com’s Marc Ross reports.

“Richardson’s situation is a Catch-22,” Ross wrote. “He has so little game experience that he needs to get on the field to develop, but he’s not ready to play at a consistent enough level to win as a starter. So the Rams would be an ideal landing spot. He’ll learn from reigning MVP Matthew Stafford in Sean McVay’s offense, and the only other quarterback currently on the roster is Stetson Bennett, who was selected 124 spots behind Richardson in the 2023 draft.”

Is Richardson the right choice for the Rams?

There is potential. We know the ceiling is high, but Richardson has barely played during his time in the league, and when he has, he’s been inconsistent to say the least.

But the opportunity to learn from Stafford in Sean McVay’s system was too good to pass up.

Yes, Stetson Bennett is on the roster, but Richardson could jump in immediately and be Stafford’s backup. As long as he proves himself worthy.

It’s an interesting move, and with Richardson’s time in Indianapolis over, he could resurrect his career in Los Angeles and potentially replace Stafford when he retires.
