On Thursday, Sony and Sucker Punch gave an in-depth look at the gameplay of Soul of the Tomb Raider during a dedicated State of Play livestream, detailing the game’s clue-based exploration and missions, combat and weapons, special game modes, and more. Following the nearly 20-minute demo, the PlayStation parent company also unveiled a limited-edition Ghost of Yotei PS5 bundle that includes the new console and DualSense controller designs.
An in-depth exploration of the gameplay of “Soul of the Goat”
In the first detailed look at Souls of Yotei’s gameplay, hosted by creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox, developer Sucker Punch shared more details about how players will seek revenge against the Yotei Six, a notorious group of bandits who murdered Atsu’s family and left her to fend for herself. Unlike 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima, the developers describe new protagonist Atsu as neither a samurai nor a ninja, but a “lone-wolf mercenary” ready to pick up any weapon or skill to defeat his enemies.
“Sucker Punch” emphasizes that “Sucker Punch” focuses on player freedom more than any game before it. The game will feature a different exploration style than other open world games. This action-adventure game features a clue system that informs players of interesting areas to explore, tasks to perform, and more. Players can interrogate defeated enemies to unlock new clues about their next objective, leading them to new areas of the map.
This clue system, represented by cards, helps players keep track of their quests and quests. The game also features a two-way bounty hunting system. As Aziz’s legend continues to spread, the price of her head rises, attracting other bounty hunters to pursue her. Atsu can also claim bounties and hunt down wanted criminals for rewards.
The grappling hook returns in Ghost of Tsushima, but this time players can also use a telescope to spot interesting landmarks on the horizon and spy on enemies in the camp. Sucker Punch also offers a number of new and returning side activities, including hot springs, a new sketching event, bamboo punch, and a new tabletop game.
New weapons and game modes in Soul of the Goat Hoof
During the State of Play live broadcast, the studio also gave a detailed introduction to the combat content in “Soul of the Goat”. Atsu can choose a melee weapon from a katana, a spear, a katana, an odachi, or even dual-wield swords. Sucker Punch states that all weapons have unique effects and are effective against specific enemies in combat. She can also use ranged weapons such as bows and rifles, as well as a variety of thrown weapons such as bombs, kunai, and blinding powder, giving her an advantage in combat.
The stream also confirmed that Atsu will be accompanied by many allies on her journey, including a mysterious wolf who can aid her in encounters. Just like in Red Dead Redemption 2, Atsu can set up camp anywhere in the open world to rest, cook, play music, and connect with various allies to provide her with upgrades.
Sucker Punch also details the various modes that will be available at launch. Black and white mode inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s films returns. The game will also pay homage to two other Japanese filmmakers, Takashi Miike and Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe, by adding two new modes that transform the player’s visual and audio experience.
Soul of the Rampant will launch exclusively on PS5 on October 2. The game is currently available for pre-order on the PlayStation Store.
