The Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot of young and talented pitching staff. From Paul Skenes and Bubba Chandler to Braxton Ashcraft and Jared Jones, the Buccaneers have dynamic weapons.
Pittsburgh had the seventh-lowest ERA last year, and it’s easy to see why. The team pitched more than they could handle.

Dan Plesac, a three-time All-Star who played two seasons with the Buccaneers in the mid-1990s, was particularly impressed with Pittsburgh’s starting rotation. He likes it so much that he recently compared it to the famous National League dynasty on MLB Network.
“It’s a really good rotation,” Plesac said on “MLB Tonight” on Tuesday. “It reminds me a lot of some of the young pitchers on the Atlanta Braves, and that might be a bit of an exaggeration until we know who they are.”
Plesac was referring to the legendary Warriors team of the early 1990s that featured Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery.

That might be a little out of reach, but Skenes is certainly at that level, and Chandler has potential.
These iconic Atlanta teams dominated the ’90s and won the World Series, so it’s an exciting comparison for the Pirates, who haven’t won a postseason since 2013 and haven’t won a championship since 1979.
However, that may be about to change. Not only does Pittsburgh have a great pitching staff, but it also significantly improved its roster in the offseason.
“This is a team built on starting pitching, no hesitation,” Plesac added. “If I’m a Buccaneers fan, this is the most enthusiastic I’ve been about a season in four or five years.”
