A Texas boomtown is rising fast with these major retail projects

It’s been called a “Growing City,” and it definitely lives up to that motto. Located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, Weslaco is quickly becoming a center of development. Whether that means residential growth, new commercial construction or industrial expansion, there’s a lot going on in the Midvalley’s largest city. Here’s everything coming to this booming South Texas town.

$46.5 million Sam’s Club currently under construction in Weslaco

Crews are currently working to build a $46.5 million bulk-buying warehouse for retail giant Sam’s Club on the city’s East Side. The project includes a 168,000-square-foot warehouse and a Sam’s Club-branded gas station on nearly 22 acres at the corner of 1015 Farm to Market Road and Barbee Boulevard. MySA visited the construction site earlier this month, where many of the warehouse’s facades have already been erected.

The Weslaco Sam’s Club will be the fifth warehouse built by a wholly-owned Walmart subsidiary in the Valley and the seventh across the border, including two Sam’s Clubs across the Rio Grande in Reynosa and Matamoros, Mexico. The Weslaco Sam’s Club is expected to create approximately 200 jobs. In exchange, Weslaco city leaders approved a $2 million property tax deal to help lure the company into making the site decision.

HEB invests $4.6 million in Weslaco store renovations

Texas grocery giant HEB is investing $4.6 million to renovate its largest store in Weslaco. The store, located at 310 N. Westgate Dr., Weslaco, TX 78596, is the largest of the two HE-B’s located in the mid-valley city. It originally opened in 2000, and a few years later a 400,000-car warehouse and truck terminal was built to supply all HE-Bs in the valley.

$6 million retail plaza coming to Weslaco’s west side

Just one block away from the Westgate HEB, a new $6 million retail plaza is under construction. In October, Weslaco city leaders, along with Valley and San Antonio-based developer Garansuay Group Construction, officially broke ground on the 5-acre development. According to plans unveiled by the developer, Westgate Mall will consist of three 8,260-square-foot buildings at the corner of Westgate Drive and Panther Drive. This is a bustling commercial corridor that, in addition to HEB, is home to several coffee chains, fast-casual restaurants, a Planet Fitness gym, several clothing retailers, and a movie theater.

Hilton-branded hotel to join Weslaco’s bustling West End

On February 9, developers submitted preliminary plans to build a $3.15 million Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel on the same busy corridor as the Weslaco Shops and HEB. Construction on the 63,202-square-foot extended-stay hotel is expected to begin in March and be completed in May 2027.
