Hi, I’m Alexa, and I usually use this space to track Donald Trump’s “hot” economy, but we also need to examine how his policies affect ordinary people—especially his loyal followers. So, welcome to Donny hates watches.

To understand today’s disaffected Trump voters, first allow me to take you back to the 2024 presidential election. During one debate, Trump was asked if, after a decade of anticipation, he finally had a plan on how to replace the Affordable Care Act. His reaction? “I have an idea of a plan.”

Well, his “concept of a plan” was apparently enough to convince millions of supporters of his vague vision.

(Health premiums have even doubled for some.)

One disgruntled voter included this anonymous Facebook poster, who wrote: “I voted for Trump in hopes that by eliminating all illegal immigrants, our health care system would ultimately be better because they are not being drained from the system.”

“Now that 2.5 million illegal immigrants have been deported, why are our insurance rates higher than ever? My prescription drug costs have skyrocketed and the quality of care seems worse than ever.”

“When are things going to start to get better? It’s been so bad this year, I can barely afford health insurance.”

“I have lost confidence in Mr. Trump!” they concluded.

Well, some fact-checking notes:

1. The Affordable Care Act prohibits undocumented immigrants from obtaining health insurance through the ACA marketplace. Many legal immigrants are also barred from entering the market until 2025. Therefore, we are not sure about the anonymous poster’s misspelled “leached from our system” comment. and;

2. The idea has become skewed as insurance tends to get cheaper as more people join.

People who saw the anonymous post were also confused.

Netizens said the premium increase should signal to Trump voters that it may not be undocumented immigrants driving up prices.

Reddit user 0zzm0s1s said: “Undocumented immigrants have never been a problem, but they are easily exploited as evil.”. “Trump supporters don’t like to hear that our problems are complex and require carefully crafted policies, investments, and compromises to solve. They like to hear this angry man talking loudly about how all their problems will be solved by building a wall, deporting immigrants, and making other countries pay tariffs. It doesn’t matter that these things will never work, it sounds great, and all he needs is their vote. Now that he’s back in the White House, he can’t care less about their problems.”

Likewise, user Protoman has this advice for those wondering why deportations don’t reduce costs:

“For the same reason, self-blame doesn’t reduce health care costs. Because those two things are not related, stupid,” they said.

The internet was like, “Maybe the leech was someone else…”

User ThoughtfulLlama commented: “Have leeches always been… rich? DUN DUN DUUUUN.”

Overall, commenters questioned what research the anonymous poster might have done before voting.

“He thinks the fewer people around who might pay for his health insurance plan, the cheaper it will be?” user janthon567 posed.

They left one last piece of advice:

“According to Trump [insurance prices] Better than ever. If you don’t like America, can you leave? ” user Ivana said.

oops. What are your thoughts?
