A 20-year-old man says he “narrowly” avoided a landslide while walking in England.
Kieron English told SWNS he was walking with a friend on Saturday, January 31, when part of the cliffs collapsed without warning on the coast of Newquay, Cornwall.
He said the two friends, along with three other people and two dogs, were suddenly trapped and “unable to escape”. Fortunately, English managed to call the police and they were eventually rescued.
“If we had gotten there 30 seconds to two minutes later, I think we would have died,” the delivery rider, who moved to the town three months ago, told SWNS, noting they were 5 to 10 feet away from where the soil and rock collapsed.

According to SWNS, three different groups ended up trapped on a concrete pad with “no safe way out.” The tide was too high to swim and the cliffs were too unstable to climb.

Matt Robins of the Newquay RNLI Lifeboat Company, one of the groups assisting with the rescue, said that while sea conditions were “not particularly rough, the scene where we had to evacuate the casualties proved very difficult”.

“As the waves rise and fall over the rocks, we have to communicate with the crew on shore and ask them to strictly follow our instructions,” he added, noting that even “a minor slip” could cause people to fall underwater.
According to SWNS, evacuees were taken to the town harbor and lifeboat station. There they were given a hot drink, checked for injuries and given advice from a paramedic.
