Trump Is Asked Whether He’ll Accept Midterm Results If Republicans Lose

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would accept Republican losses to Democrats in the midterm elections “if the elections were honest.”

It’s a sickening statement, one that the president will use to bolster future accusations of manipulation if the election doesn’t go his way, but it’s chilling all the same.

In an interview with NBC’s Tom Llamas, Trump lashed out at Democrats’ opposition to voter ID, accused several blue cities of voting corruption and declared in rhetorical terms, “We cannot allow cheating in our elections.” As he did earlier this week, the president again suggested he would impose federal controls if states fail to conduct their elections “honestly.”

Politics: With his January post. 6 Comeback, Trump may normalize coup attempts

Trump was indicted for allegedly conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss, falsely portraying it as a stolen victory. This led to an insurrection by a pro-Trump mob on January 6, 2021. The case was mostly dismissed after Trump won a second term.

During Trump’s unpopular second term, Democrats reportedly won a sizable share of the election.

“If Republicans lose control of Congress, will you trust the results of the midterm elections?” Llamas asked.

“If the election was honest, I would,” Trump responded.

Tempting the god of satire, the president added, “I’m the last person to complain.”
