LeBron James is starting to slow down at age 41, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that his NBA career is coming to an end. James will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026. The Los Angeles Lakers are Luka Doncic’s team now, and James doesn’t fit into his schedule. James may retire this summer, but it’s hard to imagine one of the all-time greats leaving the NBA without being celebrated for his contributions to the game.
There is no doubt that LeBron James’ retirement journey is approaching in the 2026-27 season, and only one team is eligible to host this event.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are open to James returning to the team this summer, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. The report comes as the Lakers visit Cleveland for the final time this season on Wednesday night. Will this be the last game James plays in his hometown? Maybe, but maybe not.
It’s easy to see rumors of LeBron returning to Cleveland for a second time and a third with the team on the horizon. One of my bold preseason predictions was that James would move to the Cavaliers this summer. It would make sense for both sides, especially after Cleveland’s championship aspirations suffered a setback this season.
This was supposed to be a Finals or bust season for the Cavaliers, and it certainly looked like they were going to be bust. At midway through the season, Cleveland wasn’t even among the top three challengers in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers are struggling for a variety of reasons, but it’s easy to blame it on injuries. Darius Garland has struggled all year due to a toe injury, Max Strus hasn’t played a game, and just about everyone else has been injured at times.
The Cavaliers may need to take some steps to bring in James, depending on what type of salary he wants. With Jarrett Allen likely being traded, the team ultimately settled on Evan Mobley as the full-time center. It’s also possible that James will play for a lower salary and try to maximize his chances of getting a storybook ending.

There will be others pursuing LeBron this summer. The Golden State Warriors would love to be a part of it, and more teams will join. It feels like LeBron’s retirement journey has to take place in Cleveland. It seems that this is the current direction of the trend.
