Details about Jeffrey Lurie-Nick Sirianni could indicate a potential change ahead

Much of what we’ve heard from respected voices about Nick Sirianni’s job security is consistent. He just led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl championship. Firing him after a year and he just signed a lucrative contract extension is bad business practice.

So, while everyone is frustrated, this isn’t going to happen. Some fans have called for him to be sacked. There was some pushback and some expected back-and-forth, but, as he should, Coach Sirianni will be back for a sixth season.

His tenure has been a strange one. He has made one playoff appearance in sporadic years during his coaching tenure (2021, 2023, 2025). Super Bowl appearances in even years (2022 and 2024). If you’re superstitious, everything will go smoothly in 2026.

Coach Sirianni faced scrutiny and plummeting approval ratings. This is also what will happen after the 2023 crash. People said at the time that he should not be allowed to return in 2024. He was given a chance to turn things around. What followed was one of the best seasons in franchise history, but Jeff McLean tells us the opportunity was nearly cut short.

Could some recent historical events be a sign of impending trouble in Jeffrey Lurie and Nick Sirianni’s working relationship?

We all wonder what Jeffrey Lurie is thinking from time to time. No one knows for sure, but sometimes, we can make an educated guess. Based on recent history, we can assume that, as we saw with Andy Reid in this organization, the run is over.

The boss appears even more impatient, having made three changes since Reid’s 14-year reign ended. Following Nick Sirianni’s 2-2 start to 2024, he appears to be on the verge of another great year.

Jeff McLane reports for the Eagles Philadelphia Inquirer. He also hosted Uncovering Birds with Jeff McLean. He noted in a recent broadcast that Sirianni’s job is indeed “in jeopardy” after four games in 2024.

“It became increasingly clear, as I later understood and as we probably knew at the time, that Nick’s future was uncertain. (Jeffrey Lurie) was definitely thinking about moving on at the time. There’s history here. Jeffrey was getting increasingly impatient when it came to his head coach. In fact, when they started the (2024) season at 2-2, that’s when they said goodbye right there, and as I understand and report now, Nick Sirianni’s job was in jeopardy and he had to make a lot of changes because Jeffrey could fire him.”

There is an old saying: Lightning never strikes the same place twice. That’s a lie. Lightning can definitely strike the same place twice.

Nick Sirianni’s job is fairly safe for now, but McLane hits the bullseye more often than not. It stands to reason that if Lurie gives his coach a brief leash in 2024, he might be willing to do so again.

The championship window is sometimes difficult to open. Once closed, they also close quickly. This team is too talented to go out in the first round, and you better believe Lurie will do everything in his power to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

This is the “new normal” that Coach Sirianni faces in his sixth season. This is more than just a winning record. He doesn’t coach for grace or kindness. He now coaches to prove the belief. Must meet standards. It’s unacceptable to waste elite talent, but here’s the good news. We learned that with a great coordinator, Sirianni can flip the switch when the last remaining hope is available.
